“Ek hi toh hain”

I know this driver, at his 50s, who drives one of my Company’s vehicles; very humble, submissive and ever smiling, named Tajuddin. Apart from his gentle nature, I have noticed a unique feature in him. Whenever he passes by a Temple, he would salute the god or goddess there, with the same devotion as he does when he passes a Durgah. One day, I asked him about this and he, very humbly, uttered a simple sentence, “Ek hi hain na, sir”.

What a matured statement, what a sign of endurance and respect for others ! I did never imagine this thought from a person, who has spent his life time in front of the steering wheel. This has provoked a serious thought process in me, as to whether we realize in our everyday’s life the value of this “oneness”!!

If you concentrate in this festive season, the essence of “oneness” is very evident. The Dusserah festival, though known in many names across different provinces, speaks about one thread which keeps human being entangled. Be it Durga Puja in East, Bathukamma in South or Mataa ki Chowki or Navratri in North and West, all speak about the Mother force and worshipping of the Divine Mother. This is really a feeling of “one” in many. Even the harvesting festivals across India speak about the “oneness”. It may be Pongal, Nobanna or Bihu, the feeling and spirit is “one” and definitely the joy of festivity in “one”.

Only problem is that we see “many” around us and sometime get carried away by the feeling of many. But the main thread is one and there are different flowers of different colors and fragrances around that single thread. “One” is literally inevitable and that oneness binds our lives.

Now, I have developed a habit of saluting any place of worship which comes my way, a Durgah, a Gurdwara and of course temples of any size, shape and version. Thanks to Tajuddin, who made me understand the very fact of life, “ek hi toh hain”.

Let’s feel the vastness of this oneness and that can be a small step towards this great world.

Enjoy the festivities!!!

An Alright Mother

The whole world is in a celebration mood being “mother’s day” today. Consumerism is at its height, hosts of advertisements, reminders, memorabilia flaunting around. All these prompted me to just rethink about my mother. A mother of two children, me being the younger. A working mother, with whom, as a child, I used to go to her school and used to fall fast asleep on her desk in the teachers’ common room. A busy mother, who used to frantically look for her umbrella everywhere in the house, and used to be irritated not finding it while going to her school. A strict mother, who used to gift me a tight slap when I used to fall asleep on my study table. And, an anxious mother, who used to be awake night after night, when I was suffering from nephritis. But as a mother, she is an expert in hiding her feelings. Her philosophy is, ‘show your feeling and spoil the child’. I still remember the day, when I was coming out for joining higher studies. My father urged her to accompany us till r...

A Suicide Note

Please don’t get perturbed by the title of this article, more than a “suicide note”, it is a note on suicide. I, along with many others, have been deeply moved by the sudden suicide of a famous Bollywood star, in the peak of his career. Questions started cropping in my mind. What and why? News says that he has been undergoing treatment for depression for last few months. Was this suicide an affect of that? No one can answer all these questions. But we can ponder over a single connecting thread over many suicides, “depression”. In our society, depression is a negative term. Once you are in depression, people look at you with the corner of their eyes and general belief is that depression is a symptom of mentally weak people. We are so scared about the societal issues related to depression, that we even hesitate to take professional help. Because our society believes that once depressed, you are either “mental” or “to be mad”. We forget that as my physical health goes throu...

Protagonist in the Making

They say that when you dream of something, there are 3Vs which may make you closer to your dream – Visualize, Verbalize and Vitalize. Visualization is important for the bigger picture, while by Verbalizing, you close the ways to go backward. Both of these make you bound to Vitalize or enliven your dream. This piece of writing is all about the second ‘V’ – Verbalize. While I had a long-cherished dream of penning down a fiction one day, by verbalizing it today, I want to close all doors behind me so that I cannot escape in anyway. I want you all to point your fingers towards me, if I cannot make within the dreamt timeline. I also want you all, as good friends of mine, to chase me, to question me on the progress, to push me towards the wall so that I complete the fiction in time and go for publishing it. My bouts of writing spells are very irregular and I suffer from ‘Irritable Creative Syndrome’ (ICS), where, I tend to fall prey of creative constipation repeatedly and tend to g...
